Energy has become expensive, and IT's appetite for electricity keeps growing - driven above all by artificial intelligence. Against this backdrop, Green IT has turned in 2026 from a voluntary sustainability topic into a regulatory and economic necessity. From July 1, 2026, stricter requirements under Germany's Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) take effect, and in March 2026 the federal government presented a national data center strategy.

Many small and medium-sized enterprises are asking themselves: does this even affect me? My server room is hardly a data center. The honest answer: the legal obligations only apply above a certain size - but the economic logic behind them applies to anyone who runs servers. Energy costs account for around half of operating expenses in data centers, and this lever can be used in a small server room too.


The Energy Efficiency Act: these deadlines apply

The EnEfG targets data centers with a non-redundant nominal electrical connection capacity of 300 kilowatts or more. Anyone below that is exempt from the hard obligations - but the key metrics are instructive for everyone. The most important figure is the PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness): it describes how much of the energy used actually reaches the IT and how much is consumed by everything around it, such as cooling. A PUE of 1.0 would be ideal.

  • From July 1, 2026: new data centers must achieve a PUE of no more than 1.2.
  • From July 1, 2030: a PUE of no more than 1.3 applies to existing facilities.
  • Energy Reuse Factor (ERF): at least 10 percent waste heat reuse for new builds from July 2026, rising to 15 percent from 2027 and 20 percent from 2028.
  • Section 12 of the EnEfG mandates an energy or environmental management system above certain sizes.

Why Green IT matters for small server rooms too

Even below the legal threshold, efficiency pays off in hard cash. The largest single item besides the IT itself is almost always cooling - it often accounts for up to 40 percent of energy demand. This is exactly where the most effective lever for SMEs lies, with no new hardware required. Proven measures:

  • Cold and hot aisle separation: prevents cooled and warm air from mixing.
  • Free cooling: using outside air for cooling when it is cold enough outdoors.
  • Higher room temperature: modern servers tolerate more heat than often assumed - every degree saves cooling capacity.
  • Virtualization and consolidation: a few well-utilized servers instead of many half-empty ones.

These measures cut not only power consumption but also running costs - often within the first year. There is also an aspect that is frequently underestimated: efficient cooling extends the lifespan of the hardware. Running servers unnecessarily hot risks more frequent failures and premature wear. Green IT is therefore not just environmental protection but investment protection too.

The background to the stricter rules is the industry's rapidly rising electricity demand. The International Energy Agency expects that data centers worldwide could consume over 1,000 terawatt hours of electricity in 2026 - more than twice as much as just a few years ago and roughly equal to Japan's entire electricity demand. The main driver is artificial intelligence, whose hunger for compute grows faster than efficiency gains can offset it. For companies, this means electricity remains a significant cost factor, and every kilowatt hour saved counts twice.

Use waste heat instead of giving it away

The ERF value required by law forces large data centers to make use of their waste heat. The principle also makes sense on a small scale: the heat servers produce anyway can help heat offices or adjacent buildings. Large operators feed waste heat into district heating networks, to industry or even greenhouses. For SMEs, a well-designed coupling of ventilation and heating is often enough to use part of the energy a second time.

An honest assessment is part of the picture: waste heat reuse only pays off if there is a consumer who needs the heat at the right time. Over the course of a year, a small server room does not generate enough heat to warm a large hall. What is realistic is preheating fresh air or supporting the office heating in the transitional seasons. If you are building or renovating anyway, plan heat reuse in from the start - retrofitting it is considerably more expensive.

Make targeted use of funding and advice

An often overlooked advantage: SMEs are not obliged to conduct energy audits, but they can benefit from state-subsidized energy consulting. This makes it possible to identify savings potential without immediately investing in expensive measurement equipment yourself. The federal government wants to at least double Germany's data center capacity by 2030 and quadruple AI capacity - with efficiency explicitly anchored as a goal, including a planned EU efficiency package with a rating scheme.

Three steps to get started

  • Measure the current state: record the power consumption of IT and cooling separately.
  • Quick levers first: cold aisle separation and raising the temperature cost little and work immediately.
  • Plan strategically: review virtualization, cloud offloading and waste heat reuse in the medium term.

Cloud or your own server room: a question of efficiency

One fundamental consideration belongs in every Green IT strategy: does the computing power need to be in-house at all? Large, professionally operated data centers achieve PUE values a small server room can only dream of. They run cooling, power supply and utilization at an efficiency level that is economically almost impossible for an individual mid-sized company to match. Moving standard workloads to a well-run cloud or a certified data center can significantly reduce your own energy footprint.

But the cloud is not always greener or cheaper across the board. What matters is the specific utilization, the data volumes and the question of whether data must stay local for data protection or latency reasons. A sober comparison therefore makes sense: which systems really belong on-site, which can be offloaded, and where is a hybrid solution the best compromise? This decision should be based on numbers, not gut feeling.

Conclusion

In 2026, Green IT is no longer an image topic but a matter of costs and compliance. If you fall below the 300-kilowatt threshold, you are not legally bound - but you benefit just as much from lower energy costs. If you are above it, you should keep a close eye on the deadlines from July 2026. In both cases: efficiency in cooling and utilization is the fastest route to noticeably lower electricity bills.
